Yes, but the sw_vers man page says ...

DESCRIPTION
     sw_vers prints version information about the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server
     operating system running on the local machine.

so the info provided by sw_vers is for the currently running OS, not for the OS installed on some disk that is not the current startup disk.
