My question is:
is there a way to perform an action in System Events (in this case, the click UI element) and test to see if the action happens sucessfully?

Sorry for the long message.

G4 dual PowerPC running Tiger 10.4.11, Safari 4.1

So, you can't upgrade to UI Browser 2.1.0, because it requires Leopard or newer. UI Browser 1.4.1 is in fact the newest version for you.
