It is not free, but in addition to displaying the time, it's also an system & activity monitor.  The best part of being an activity monitor is that it's already running when you wonder why your computer is being slow, and you can immediately see if something is paging or hogging all the memory or CPU time.  It's customizable, so you can make it look however you like and it takes some time to figure out all the information it shows, but once you understand the display and get it set the way you like, it's amazingly useful.
