As an interesting aside, there is a simple way to make the clock, or any other widget, eg. Dictionary or Weather, which appear on Dashboard, show up on the Desktop.

This requires a terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES  --alternative setting is NO
--followed by
killall Dock --to restart the Dock

Now you activate the Dock (F8 on my MacBook), select the widget you want and hold it with your mouse button down - (to make sure you have the widget, try moving it around), and press F12 to return to the Desktop.

The Clock Widget - or whichever widget you selected, should float through to your desktop.

Voilá..
