As far as AppleScript is concerned, Microsoft greatly enhanced Excel 2008.
By "crippling" you must be referring to the absence of VBA and macros? I
can't see what else you might mean. That certainly hurts cross-platform
compatibility with Excel on Windows, but almost everything (except macros
that can run automatically when you open a file) that was done in VBA can
now be done in AppleScript. The syntax is rather contorted, but learnable,
and it mirrors the VBA that's (temporarily) gone. AppleScript in Excel 2004
was hugely enhanced (if made syntactically awkward), and improved in 2008.
I don't know Numbers, but it certainly doesn't have VBA, that's for sure. My
understanding is that it is serviceable but not capable of the more complex
reaches of Excel, and the same with its AppleScript.
There's a new version of Excel coming out later this year that will have VBA
restored.
