code runs in script editor, hangs as an FBA

anybody got any ideas as to why
tell application "System Events"
set pInfoFile to property list file etvFilename
...
runs slower & slower as each file is read, until it hangs ~6th
file...but only when run as a stand-alone fba. when i run the same
code from the script editor, it rips thru all the files in seconds...
the problem exists both in 10.6.3 as well as 10.4.11...and it's only
recently that this problem's arisen, as i've extended my existing
script objects to work with eyetv...the fba's original functions
still work fine, it's only the code that reads the eyetv plists that
hang...
or is it time 2 rewrite in python/appscript?;-)
