I don't know what causes it, but I tested it.  With a preferences folder containing 809 items, the script takes 35 seconds, whether searching for files that begin with, contain, or are the search string.

Doesn't matter whether "as alias list" is there or not.

Changing the folder to the user's library folder, with 89 items, the search is less than one second.

Changing to the Applications folder, with 117 items, it takes 3 seconds.

And a folder containing 167 PDF files and nothing else, it takes 1 second.
