Look a little deeper ;)
GhostScript is a kind of public domain PostScript rip. I convert pdf.s to
jpg.s all day long (using Lasso as middleware, on a Mac Mini).
It's not at all pretty or directly applescriptable, but it is fast. Finding
just the right way to get the right version installed was a pain, but is
easily testable from the command line once installed. Test file I've used is
a little tiny postscript text file that instantly rips to jpg.
