You can build iPhone apps using common Web languages using PhoneGap (which also makes them easily portable to Android, Palm Pre, etc); there's also Adobe's cross-compiler for building iPhone apps using the Flash/Flex development tools.
But yes, Obj-C is the normal way of doing things, and you may end up down a dead-end if you take one of those other roads - they may not be updated in the future to fix bugs, support new APIs, etc, whereas Obj-C most definitely will be.
And once you get past the, uhm, unique syntax it's quite an elegant language and toolset.
