Server icon presence on desktop

Why do servers show up on the Desktop? How do you determine/verify if the desktop alias is really there?

A particular share is disappearing from the desktop every week or two - but the volume is still mounted and all the files can be accessed in /Volumes/share name/. Even stranger - Other file shares hosted by the same os x server stay on the desktop, as well as all other servers.

The desktop icon can also be restored by typing open /Volumes/share name which opens the root of the mount point in a Finder window. This seems to remind the Mac that it is still mounted to the share.

Applescripts with paths to the server don't work if the share is not on the desktop. I'd love to find an AppleScript or shell script to determine when I'm in this condition so I can act.

Thx Dave
