I was wondering if there are any guidelines for speeding up a script?
Tons, but they all depend on what the script is doing, and with what
applications. A script that spends a lot of time waiting on user input isn't
going to be optimized the same way as one doing heavy text processing

There are some tips in the book Applscript The Definitive Guide by Matt Neuburg. The loops are what you want to optimize. What you really should get are some tools for timing milliseconds they are out there with some googling. Best regards Tommy Bollman
I looked at Matt's book and all I could find was a short section on loops.
