Others have answered the code question, but it's the "probably quicker" that
interests me. I mean, this implies the existing version is slow -- have you
timed it?

FWIW, I used something like Michelle's code, and it did 10000 iterations in
less than a second on my Mac. I doubt you're going to find anything
significantly faster than that.

I suspect you're assuming the amount of code somehow means it must be slow,
but you can't judge code that way. For example, the one-liner using current
date takes nearly 30 times longer to do 10000 iterations.
