Thanks for the answer. The GUI scripting is not the problem. Where
do I find out about using system events to watch for some sort of
"dialog box has popped up" event?

OsiriX. My problem is that OsiriX ignores XML-RPC commands when it is
displaying a dialog box, so I want to get rid of the dialog box
somehow as soon as possible. I don't really like the idea of GUI
scripting, but if that's the quickest way to get this done then that's
what I'll have to do.
