uhm, ouch?

Descriptive variable names are very helpful in any code that's going
to survive past its first run, UNIX or otherwise.  Sure, if it's a
one-liner at the shell prompt, single letter names (and all those
other tricks that make commands that are easy to type but hard to
read) are fine.  If you're saving it in your bin, it's worth thinking
about the names.
