I know the answer to that question! He says that because you have provided too little information for anyone to make anything but an educated guess. And as educated guesses go his was pretty good.
I seem to recall there's a condition in AppleScript where the value of a variable becomes undefined in certain circumstances, like when you set it to a missing value in a handler, or something, and that would be my educated guess, but we have no way of knowing because we're not seeing enough of your script to say.
It could also be a ghost in the machine for all we know!
I would recommend that when anyone is posting this kind of question to the list, before you post, try to reduce the script to the simplest possible scenario where the problem still exists. If we can simply copy and paste from your email into a script and run it that's even better.
This will help everyone help you figure out what's going on.

I try to do this whenever I have a question like this, and I try to post as simple an example as possible that still illustrates the problem.
I have found that just doing that, simplifying the script, removing variables (not appleScript variables, but irrelevant parts of the script) often helps me figure out what's going on.
