Why does saving the file from TEP (in a script or manually) in 10.4 allow it
to be reopened via TEP but when saved by TEP in 10.6 it wants to open via
TextEdit?
Because in 10.6 the ONLY file typing mechanism that counts
is the file name
extension. So you can only have one application per file extension.
You can add a resource to individual files via the finder
to override this
on a file by file basis, but that's stupid. However, stupid has won this
particular battle.
You can also change the default app for opening a file or files
of the same type by using "Get info". Alternatively You could
install the RCDefaultApp prefpane and have control of a lot more
than just what app opens a file.

I have no connection to the vendor.
