If you have confirmed that the Finder recognizes .nzb and .torrent as valid file extensions, then using the 'name extension' would seem to be safe and the most simple solution.

How does the Finder know about file extensions?
And if an extension is recognized on your Mac, will it be recognized on mine?

On my Mac (10.6.4) the extensions .nzb is not recognized, but .torrent is recognized!
Your solution seems to be the safest.
