The default menu keyboard shortcut for the Spotlight menu is command-Space.  Your system may be configured differently.  You can set the keyboard shortcut inside of the Spotlight pane of the System Preferences.

Using a Script Addition (as suggested by Alex) can be a good solution but makes your script less portable.  I stick to built-ins unless there's absolutely no other solution.
