system services ?

Is there a way to "easily" create system services without using Automator ?
And possibly without using 3rd party software ?

I find that Automator is too slow for very fast actions and I'd like a faster way to do what I want to do...

I thought about Applescript but what about packaging the script into a recognized service ?
