The afplay command accepts a volume flag, as in:

/usr/bin/afplay /System/Library/Sounds/Tink.aiff --volume 7

They don't say what the range is for the volume, but the default volume seems to be 1. Even 2 is noticeably louder, but the value seems to be non-linear. Volume 100 is definitely not 100 times as loud as volume 1. It's not a mere cap. Volume 99999 is louder than volume 9999, but not by much. The sound is clearly distorted above volume 999 (and maybe sooner to those with better ears than mine). _______________________________________________
