set volume with / without output muted - fails in 10.7 (GM)

and

set volume without output muted

no longer seem to work in OS X Lion 10.7 (GM)

Is there another way to do this now? Is this functionality now deprecated? going to be? Is there a workaround if I just want to mute the volume and/or unmute the volume?
