In general. Is Lion still "UNIX underneath"? Does Steve still say that?
/tmp is where temporary files belong.
The very idea that temp files ought to be in a subdirectory under directory var which has been moved to /private/var is quite different from the UNIX we grew up with. Why???
It has to be a way for Apple to muck with permissions on the intervening directories they have added. It's hard to explain as a way to keep intruders out but it might well be a way to keep real users who have paid their dues from using all of the machine. Perish the thought that an application not written with X-code should work properly.
Just what are the permissions on all of the intervening directories? Are they special values which Finder will treat specially? Whatever has happened to "UNIX underneath?"
