Thanks for your valuable insights, Shane! I declare 'do shell script' to be the winner.

True for shell commands, but a couple years back, the net-sftp RubyGem broke some scripts when it went to version 2.0 with a ground-up rewrite. I hadn't checked for backward compatibility before blindly upgrading.

The escape-key bug is an acceptable risk, since the scripts are all running on dedicated machines. It's probably a greater risk that Photoshop, or some other UI dragger, would get pushed to the background, lose focus, and break.
