Since I've used mdfind a bit I'm quite certain that on my machine it will descend further than one folder. Spotlight would be quite useless if it didn't.
I've gone to the trouble of installing an older version of Script Debugger to demonstrate that 'mdfind' will discover more than one version of the same application.
