Yes.  My original post in the recent 'Url Access Scripting' thread posited just such syntax as a work-around.

I have not, but I will after a much needed nap.

Quite a few of the command-line programs in Snow Leopard are out-of-date, however in the case of 'grep' it appears to have been updated since SL was released (if my read of the update-map on Git is correct).
