True, but individual subscribers can choose to simply ignore posts that are
too hard too follow.
After years and years of trying to deal with this, I now simply hit delete
immediately on every message that is top posted, and have kill-filed the most
notorious non-quote-trimmers and top-posters. It's just too much work to
figure out what they're trying to say. And actually, when I do bother to
decipher, I find that most of them don't have much to offer anyway. It's
mostly people asking for help -- the regulars, who provide the jewels, almost
all bother to be clear.
In fact, that's what sucks the most. Seeing a question, providing an answer,
only to then receive an indecipehrable follow-up question (often even
off-list). After experiencing that explaining how to ask clear questions
invariably resulted in rude responses, I started to just ignore those
follow-ups. And by now I find myself ignoring the original questions even,
because I know what a response leads to. So I'm hardly posting anymore :(
(Btw, not trimming quoted text is the main issue IMO. Well-trimmed quotes
with a short message at the top can, *very* occassionally, make sense.)

Yeah, I can see the argument. But at some point people do give up. Year after
year, day in day out, deciphering garbage just so you can help some stranger
for free. It gets old at some point.
