More relevantly, the rules were designed for discussion fora. In one-to-
one e-mail communications, you'll have written specifically to the
person from whom you get the reply and will probably remember what you
wrote. Or it may not actually matter what you wrote. In such cases, the
correspondence is just like an exchange of letters and top posting makes
perfect sense.
In a discussion forum, even an e-mail one, there may be several people
taking part in any particular discussion and possibly quite a few not
taking part but following with interest. The people taking part will
have several things to say about various aspects and points raised
during the discussion, When a new e-mail comes in, you can immediately
see who the poster is, but you don't know to which point by whom they're
responding until you read the quotes. That's why it's courteous to have
a small amount of orientation quote at the top of your reply. It's also
courteous to remove any unnecessary stuff from previous posts from your reply.
No-one's trying to take away your God-given right to top-post in e-mails
— just to use brains and courtesy on a general forum.
