Emmanuel, I don't think this is true. Those files are read when required and this might not be only on launch.
If you have certain preferences in the "Finder" and change a certain preference, then (some times) of this preference might be read right away, some times will need a relaunch and some times we do get this information, for instance change the System Language.
I wouldn't expect the crash the Luther is getting but there might be some consequences due to corruption.
