Hmm.  I wonder where you are getting this information.  I have tried playing the same file using Quicktime with the system volume set to max via the sound menu bar item and using afplay with -v 256.  They sound identical to me.  On the other hand -v 1 sounds very muted and definitely not max volume.  If I set the system volume to max, -v 1 sounds max.

The v seems to be a multiplier of the current system volume setting. _______________________________________________
