Your approach doesn't work for ß, is the point. The uppercase version
is SS, two letters. (And the titlecase version would be Ss, though
AFAIK it's not possible for a word to begin with ß.)
And that's just one special case, from a widely-spoken European
language. Monolingual/monalphabetic English speakers get spoiled and
think it's just as easy for everyone else, when it's not. (OTOH, most
writing systems don't have case at all, which is easier, but aside
from the Chinese languages, the most popular languages in the world
use one of the cased scripts.)
