JPEG is already a lossy compression.
PNG might be but, if unless it's simple vector graphics perhaps not.
BMP depends on the size of the original and may or my not be lossy when viewed with Adobe's PFD viewer.
Personally I would run, not walk, to Graphic Converter by Lemke Software. At least their software will give you fairly well defined options. It's AppleScript interface is not bad.
PDF is not really a good way to deliver graphics to a user or other correspondent. Send the document you want with its appropriate filename extension. *.PDF files that are really just an embedded JPEG ought to be banned from the universe.
