It requires the standard date format, which depends to a degree upon the language set in international preferences. With American English it's

date "month, day, year", with the commas being optional. The month can be spelled out in full, have a three-character abbreviation, or be an integer from 1 to 12. Alternatively, it can be in the form date "mm/dd/yyyy" The year can be two or four digits, but if using two digits, if they're 50-99, it defaults to the 1900s; if 00 through 49, it defaults to the 2000s. Also, the month and day can be expressed with one digit, if appropriate.
