Could really use some help understanding this. Sure I am missing something fundamental here

I have a script that acts on incoming mail and if the action errors out sends a reply email.

Hey James,

The simple answer is that Mail's Applescript implementation is buggy and incomplete.

While you can script a reply, you cannot really do much with that outgoing message once it's created.

In order to do something that you have reasonable control over you have to gather your requisite information from the incoming email, create your own new outgoing message, and populate it as you see fit.

Mail 5 also has a bug that prevents attachments from sticking.
