That's when shelling out to built-in tools can come in handy. You can just treat the specifics of the callout as a magic spell - learn the proper incantation and the desired effect occurs. Why? How? Who knows? It's magic! ;-)

Very true.
I would have given up on Applescript in the mid '90s if it weren't for osaxen, and I've always been surprised at how many people have been totally unwilling to install any of them.
This is one of the reasons I finally started learning Mac OS X's built-in tools aside from their general utility.
The osaxen on my system:
MARK ALLDRITT (LATE NIGHT SOFTWARE / SCRIPT DEBUGGER)
List & Record Tools.osax
Property List Tools.osax
XML Tools.osax
SMILE (SATIMAGE):
FITS.osax
Numerics.osax
Satimage.osax
XMLLib.osax
TETSURO KURITA
LapTime.osax
UTILITIES:
Default Folder X Addition.osax
QuicKeysIM.osax
The ones I use on a regular basis in scripts:
Satimage.osax (Every Day)
LapTime.osax (Regularly for speed testing)
