That's what I originally thought (read-only). However, looking closely, the "content" is read-only for a "message". The "reply" verb returns an "outgoing message" (not a "message") whose "content" is not read-only, so I would expect I could set it. Furthermore, when I try to set a read-only property, I get an error event, but in the present case setting the property does not raise an error, but neither does it seem to do anything useful.

A message's content is read only. Take a look at the Text Suite for Mail to see the classes and elements available in it. It takes a lot of poking around in  dictionaries to get a sense of the the inherited capabilities of different properties and elements. Lots.
