Good question. Ask Apple. File yet another bug... Entire Contents has been problematic for its entire history.
'find ~/Library/Mail/V2/' will list my entire V2 directory in about 2 seconds.
About 67,500 lines.
To find just messages:
find -E ~/Library/Mail/V2/ -iregex ".+\.emlx?$"
