Dear AppleScripters,
I've mentioned OS X's screenshot feature. I have nothing against it. It's certainly useful, and I wish Microsoft stole it. I mentioned it because this feature violates one of the review guidelines. And Mac App Store people are hypocritical enough to close their eyes when it comes to their own software products. How does it violates a review guideline? If your application sends a file directly to a location including Desktop other than application's Application Support folder, the Mac App Store reviewer would surely reject your application by saying that it doesn't follow 'file-system usage requirements for the app store.' The application can export a file to a location other than its Application Support folder (or Pictures, Music, Movies) only if the user is prompted to select a file location. If Lion is an exception because it's OS, then how about Safari? What is Safari's default download file path? Does it prompt you to select a location when you want to save a file for the first time? How about Mail? Isn't the default download location set to Downloads? Does it prompt you to select a file location? My point? Their products don't follow the rules of their own.
Furthermore, I've mentioned that the Mac App Store version of Xcode violates one of the review guidelines. It's not supposed to access .bin to install command-line tools. Period. I don't know how they convince independent software developers to abide by their guidelines when in fact their own people don't. Exporting a file to Desktop sounds appropriate. Why would you send a file to a remote location that regular users have no business with? In fact, once I refused to point a default export location to application's Application Support folder, and a reviewer threatened to take down the entire application. For the sake of existing users, I had no choice but to come up with a workaround.
By the way, I have an app that has a feature allowing the user to change default screenshot export destinations and graphic formats. It's just the matter of manipulating a system file with Defaults. But this feature will soon be invalidated when Mac App Store requires in November that every new software submission has the sandboxing feature enforced. That also ensures the death of all Carbon binaries.
Windows still sucks. I hate their default bitmap system font. But I'm left with no choice but to leave Mac OS. I might change my mind if they stop delivering new Macs with that useless keyboard. Anyhow, I won't develop any more new Mac apps, listening to hypocritical people.
