Jim,
I understand your frustration over the App Store and some inconsistencies. Zack makes excellent points about selling the OS itself through the MAS. The OS (and Xcode) is completely under Apple’s control and they know what it does and where files go.
Also, consider Apple’s overall strategy and things make sense a lot more. Apple wants to have a Zero Virus OS, a completely worry free Store experience. Their sandbox system is to ensure Apps Store apps can do no harm ever, period. You can’t manipulate other
system files with your app. If you were to give a broad interpretation, any malware might want to do something like this and change your system prefs unknowingly.
But you still, as of this time, have the option to sell privately. The MAS is a great way to deploy, but not the only one. If your app needs to do things “not allowed”, then don’t sell there.
Perhaps MAS rules and sandboxing should be refined. But I don’t think it’s a reason to leave the environment.
