I want a solution that allows complete regular expression capability without requiring user-maintained external resources. And I don't want to have to operate on an external file.
I'll be checking out Alex's sed suggestions to see if they will work.
It's a drag that AppleScript does not have regular expression management built in (or part of Standard Additions). Just about every other modern language does.
