And, sadly, even the second one fails with ß -- Python only covers 1:1 matchings.

The other two use the OS's APIs, which in turn use the ICU library. (I gather there's a push for Python to use the ICU library too.)

So unless there's some other "do shell script" trick, you really *do* have to add additional software. Which is really just crazy, IMO...
