Hello Wayne,
I was quickly experimenting with SE when your second email arrived into my mailbox... anyway, just in case:
tell application "System Events"
tell XML file "~/Desktop/wayne.jdf"
tell first XML element
value of XML attribute "ID"
--> 34578
end tell
end tell
end tell
Of course, xmllib is faaar more powerful. ;-)
