It's possible that the user calling the script does not have permission to eject the disk.  Also the system may not want to eject when something is open in an application or in Finder itself.

I would expect an error message for those though.

It would be worth trying the command in a Terminal window where STDERR would not get lost and a sudo could easily be prefixed.
