Before doing something that might be dumb, I went to http://developer.apple.com/search/ to see if I could find any info on the maximum string length that could be used as a file comment.
I found this from Apple Filing Protocol Reference: "This command stores the comment data in the Desktop database and associates the comment with the specified file or directory. If the comment is longer than 199 bytes, the comment is truncated to 199 bytes without returning an error."
Interesting. So I tried to manually add a very long comment to a folder. 604 characters. Nothing is truncated. The comment, even after a restart is 604 characters. (OS X 10.6.8)
Surely there must be a limit to the length of a comment! But what is it?
