I run OS 10.3.9 on my G4 and Lion bothers me regularly. The lady uses it on a nice new Mac and attempts to pass a file to me. I use ssh to log in to her machine where I have an administrator account.
An SCP command to read from her public folder, where she put the file, often fails to work.
The problem seems to be that setting permissions to something other than 200 (8) for her $HOME/Public folder doesn't stick. I'm not sure how long it takes but the last time it was at least a month since the previous download.
My solution is to log in with plain ssh, become a superuser, change permissions on her Public directory, logout and then copy the files with scp running on my G4.
That error message really ought to inform you just which file or directory is shutting your operation down. I consider that a bug in Apple's implementation of UNIX. The fact is that you have to check permissions on everything in the path to be sure Lion hasn't decided to turn you off.
Repair Permissions as a tool might be doing it but the lady says she doesn't do that in any regular fashion. The UNIX daily, weekly, monthly cleanups as delivered by Apple might also be doing damage like that. I have no idea what iCloud is capable of.
We have a group defined for members of the household - 2. It works to set the group access on my Linux box and the G4. It also worked when the lady was running Snow Leopard. It might now but it's a PITA to get the group assignments made with a GUI procedure and I'm a bit afraid to mess up Lion by attempting it using UNIX commands or changing /etc/passwd..
