Nothing beyond the command line is *necessary*.
I remember when Apple changed the open/save dialogs to include small non-generic icons, way back whenever. People crawled out from under their rocks and started complaining about how it was all just decorative fluff, how dare they slow down our machines with this nonsense, we'll all be runed, yada, yada, yada. Those were the days of 4K aliases -- so robust, they couldn't even survive a simple backup and restore.
Heck, in the beginning the Mac was decried for wasting bytes (all 22K) on a bit-mapped screen, when it was so *unnecessary* for text.
Stuff evolves. Files get bigger, but so do disks. Features get added that might be no use to lots of users because they'll be of use to others. Aliases having previews will probably be a big deal to people storing stuff on iCloud. Changes made in the way alias files are stored are vital to the way many sandboxed apps work. Bigger previews are appreciated by users of Retina displays. Many developers are happy that, finally, they can now create their own alias files, something they never used to be able to do. And Apple will be able to retire some old Carbon code. Hopefully we end up with something at least as robust -- we've actually gained on that score -- and more generally useful.
Think we we'd be if the guiding principle was to do only what was "really necessary". Or we spent out lives counting the bytes.
(And your Mail arrangement sounds like a good candidate for hard links.)
