In this case I only deleted the icon showing in the Finder's Get-Info dialog.

Looking with RezDet shows an icns resource still in there, but I see no way to get rid of it without deleting the resource fork or going in and deleting the resource itself.

After deleting the icon there is no icon showing in any Finder view, so what is the purpose of this phantom icon? Destroying the resource fork appears to leave the preview intact.
