Yes. System Events has always seemed to be very very strange.
And it seems to change over time.
I just keep trying things until I hit something that works.

Some years ago, I had trouble using aliases. It seems that aliases created outside the System Events block didn't work. Using 'alias as text' and 'disk item' seemed to avoid errors.

It now seems that aliases created by System Events will work in System Events.
(Could be a bug here ... ?)
