Hey Bob,
Yvan is right on the money about the problem.
tell application "GraphicConverter" set f to file of front window end tell
--> file "Ryoko:Users:chris:test_directory:Image 02.jpg"
GraphicConverter is now using a «class furl» rather than an alias, but that should not be a problem.
