Which brings me to the question of a source on the web where

Google is your friend:

http://www.codemacs.com/coding/applescript/applescript-key-codes-refere
nce.
8288271.htm

Just to point out that key codes correspond to geographical keys on the
keyboard, not to particular characters. The character produced when a
key's pressed, or a key code issued, depends on the software keyboard in
use at the time. The character/key pairings on the codemacs page are
probably for US English keyboards. They don't all match my British
English keyboard and certainly don't match French ones. I should think
the list's OK for non-character keys, though.

I'm using a small free app called Key Codes. I don't know if it works on all keyboards however.
