Hey Bob,

Not quite what you want, but:

set volume output volume 50

I have a few key-driven volume actions in FastScripts for low, medium, and high volume.

And you could do ± <value> to "scroll" it.

Opt-Shift-[Volume-Key] also works to move in smaller increments than just the Volume-Key.

Keyboard Maestro has a few volume control actions too.
